Our study, "Taking the Fear Out of Funerals" revealed that many of us now believe that people should talk more about death - it remains one of the last great social taboos. Most of us want funerals to remember a life and believe we should make our own funeral wishes clear to friends and relatives.

And so, just as the facts of life are changing, so are the facts of death; funerals need to move with the times in response to people's changing needs . People tell us they need more help in arranging a personal tribute to the person they have lost. And - as death is already distressing enough - they want funeral providers to help reduce the fear surrounding funerals.

Our work on the Funeralcare Initiative has focussed on our service to provide more choice, knowledge and support as well as providing lighter and brighter premises, which are warm, welcoming and uplifting. This is our vision for the future of funerals.

As part of that initiative we established the Funeralcare Forum in 2002. This is a public panel which has examined ways in which the funeral experience can be improved. The forum has provided some valuable insights, not least of which is the need for more information to help people make every funeral special. These findings were published in October 2003 in the [ Funeral Rights Report ]. At the same time, staff in our funeral homes also tell us that an increasing number of bereaved families are looking for advice on [ how to write a eulogy ]. Our guide, [ Well Chosen Words ] has now been produced to fill this clear information gap. The inspirational quotes it contains come not only from eulogies given at funerals but from tributes paid publicly following a death. We believe it is important to help people arrange funerals which truly reflect the life of an individual Well Chosen Words underlines our commitment to that goal.

In addition to providing funerals at the time of need, Co-operative Funeralcare has also recognised the importance of providing the [ Funeral Pre-Payment Plan ] which allows for funeral arrangements to be made and paid for in advance of death. When we look to the future, we realise the importance of preparing for the time when we are no longer here. Most of us want the reassurance that everything will be taken care of when the time comes, and we want to do everything we can to reduce the burden for our loved ones. [ The Funeral Pre-Payment Plan ] has been designed with this in mind.

During the last decade, Co-operative Funeralcare has played a leading role in improving standards of consumer protection for the bereaved and is a key member of the National Association of Funeral Directors, now one of the UK's leading professional associations, and our work is continuing to provide funeral services that meet society's changing needs.
