Metal facts

1. If all cans in the UK were recycled it would fill 14 million fewer dustbins

2. Every steel can is 100% recyclable and can be recycled over and over again

3. One recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for three hours

4. Metal recycling contributes more than any other sector to UK targets for the prevention of waste through recovery of “end of life” products

5. Producing steal from recycled compared with virgin material saves 75% of the energy needed.

6. In industry steel recycling is common “home scrap” generated by the steel manufacturing process is re-melted and used over and over again. It never leaves the mill, refinery or foundry.

7. Recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy it takes to make new aluminium- and produces only 5% of the CO 2 emissions.

8. The energy required to make one aluminium can from raw materials could be used to make 20 recycled cans

9. Worldwide more than 400 million tonnes of metal are recycled each year

10. Americans throw away enough aluminium every three months to rebuild the UK’s entire commercial air fleet.
